'Moine Blanc Curé' - Œuvre de Jozia Gozdz (2006)

Discovery and recreation

This figurative work is carved from a five-ton block of small granite from Sprimont, shaped by the artist using a grinder, hammer, and chisel. It depicts a monk, dressed in a robe, in a position of prayer. The hood that 'consumes' his face and his bowed head symbolize the desire of the man of God to dedicate himself solely to prayer and not to let his gaze wander. The theme of the monk emerged naturally, as the former presbytery of the Blancs Curés is located below the church (private property).

Jozia GOZDZ was born in Liège in 1950 to a Polish father and a Russian mother. She first lived in Liège before settling in Baillonville. She began painting courses at the Fine Arts in Liège in 1992 and responded in 1994 to a 'call of the stone' that led her to sculpt exclusively in this material. The city of Marche presented her with several blocks of small granite from which she has created sculptures that now adorn various places in the municipality of Marche. Stones weighing fifteen tons that she has eroded, shaped, chiseled, and refined with passion, love, and perseverance, keeping deep within herself the mystery and questioning of the purpose of her work. It is true that monumental sculpture is not easily associated with women's work. Therefore, it is a true challenge for one who accepts to play the game. She could choose to work on more discreet pieces, but Jozia Gozdz loves to challenge the material. She wants to assert her personality in grand works turned towards the light, pieces that are both feminine and masculine, which will undoubtedly resonate.
