L'ancienne carrière de marbre dite 'Saint-Hubert'

Discovery and recreation

In the southwest of the village, in the area known as Cocrai (or Thier de Coquerai), lies the former marble quarry known as 'Saint-Hubert'. Mainly exploited during the 18th century, the marble from this site was used almost exclusively for the decoration of the abbey church of Saint-Hubert and the adjoining abbey palace. The Benedictine abbey of Saint-Hubert acquired the Thier de Coquerai through a land exchange and operated this marble quarry between 1730 and 1760. Located southwest of Humain, between the Notre-Dame de Saint-Remy abbey and the now-vanished village of Thys, this quarry provided the materials necessary for the renewal of the abbey church's decor - where marble plays a crucial role - and for the reconstruction of the abbey palace - whose interiors are lavish - of Saint-Hubert. Mining activities at this site then ceased. In 1889, the quarry was sold to P.J. Devillers. It later passed to the Merbes-Sprimont company, which halted operations around 1975. The marble known as 'Saint-Hubert' is a gray-pink marble veined with white.
