Château d'Hassonville

Discovery and recreation

Located between Aye and Marloie, the Château d'Hassonville (hotel-restaurant not visible from the road) is surrounded by a stunning 55-hectare park designed by a student of Le Nôtre, the landscape architect of Louis XIV. The oldest part (the main building) dates back to 1687 and was built by Charles Gauthier de la Veranderie, governor of the city of Marche. As is the case with many other castles, the Château and estate of Hassonville have seen several successive families of owners. In 1692, the estate was acquired by Jean-François de Belhoste and remained in the family for a century and a half. It was then bequeathed to Frantz de Neunheuser, who put it up for sale. At that time, the estate covered 650 hectares. It was purchased in 1857 by Paul Alphonse Henry, husband of Labbeville (see vicarage house in Marche-en-Famenne). The couple significantly modernized the castle, notably by installing heating and greenhouses. Their son, Charles-Henry, husband of Valérie de Donnéa de Fologne, sold it to Baron Ferdinand Drion du Chapois in 1911. His descendants sold the castle in 1985, along with 55 hectares of the estate, to Christian Rodrigues, the current owner.
