Conference: The Evolution of the Woods and Forests of the Fagne-Famenne-Calestienne
Event
Come and discover the evolution of the woods and forests of the Fagne-Famenne-Calestienne over the past centuries.
They now cover more than 700,000 hectares, accounting for nearly 23% of the national territory, and offer astonishing diversity.
Initially shaped by natural factors (temperature, altitude, sunlight, rainfall, and physical characteristics of the soils),
the forests have since been transformed by various local and regional human factors, and later by national and international influences.
During the conference, particular attention will be given to this evolution.
The speaker, Pierre-Alain Tallier, holds a PhD in contemporary history (Université Libre de Bruxelles), is a Research Master and Head of the "Brussels" Department at the Royal Archives and State Archives in the provinces.
For over 35 years, he has been working on the evolution of woods and forests and forest ownership since the end of the Ancien Régime (thesis on the subject in 1997).
