If you want to enjoy the charm of a town which has been remarkably renovated while preserving many witnesses of its past as well as its architectural atmosphere from the 19th century, go to Marche-en-Famenne. You won't be disappointed!
The harmonious architecture of the town, its remarkably well-renovated streets and buildings of character, its pedestrian area and shady squares, its numerous fountains and sculptures are all tokens of a successful urban renewal. The successful restoration of its historic buildings was recognised by the award of the European EDEN prize to Marche-en-Famenne in 2011, for a European Destination of Excellence. Among its major sites: the Juniesse Tower, the house Jadot (Famenne Museum), the Carmelite place, the castle Van der Straten (town hall), several restaurants such as the Latin Quarter (in an ancient Jesuit church), the Manoir, the ancient corn exchange, ... Marche also has the Museum of the Chasseurs Ardennais, Saint-Remacle Church and the Fond des Vaulx natural site, ... Marche and its surroundings can be visited on foot, by bike as well as in a horse-drawn carriage or in a vintage jeep. From the little shop in the heart of the city to the department store in the surroundings, shops and restaurants for every budget! Its fortnightly market takes place on 1st and 3rd Monday of the month. Located on two main roads and served by the railway, Marche is easily accessible. It is the ideal starting point for tourists willing to discover numerous famous touristic sites.
A bit of history... The name of many streets refers to the past of the city, including the street 'Rue des Dentellières' ('Lace Street') which reminds that Marche was a very important lace center. The city of Marche and the surrounding villages did indeed count up to 850 lace workers during the 18th century, craft that the "Dentelle de Marche" association still perpetuates and to which a room at the Famenne Museum is dedicated.
